The Murren Group - Who are we?
The Murren Group is driven by the evangelism ministry of Doug Murren. One could say the MG began in 1970. It was that year that Doug Murren began evangelizing and in a few years church planting. The summer of 1970 Doug began sharing his faith with a group of pot smoking younger folks in a park. Soon there were nearly 100 students listening and he led them a few blocks to a Christian student ministry house where nearly 100 students received Christ. He led them to the church ministry house because he really wasn’t certain how to handle the level of interest. This episode became the standard experience for his ministry.
Doug for a few years was a member of an outreach rock band but one of the speakers and saw the next couple years 1000’s of students monthly receives Christ in high school assemblies and at rock festival type events. “I wasn’t really a great bass player or guitarist, but I had to do something with the group.”
Doug is a graduate of Seattle Pacific University upon graduation had his first staff experience in 1973 as a Bible College President and staff Pastor. And in 1980 he and a small group of friends started a church in greater Seattle, Washington latter affiliated with the Foursquare Movement. The group started with 12 people and within a couple decades reported 10’s of thousands of conversions to their surprise and a church of 6000 people was established.
Doug then in 2001 retired from pastoral ministry and went out on his own evangelism and church consultation work. He was a sought-out designer of effective churches. He has had his hands in helping hundreds of churches and assisting in the start of over 100 new churches with several groups.
He then was ordained with the Free Methodist denomination and served as a support person in Seattle and then a church in Boise. He found his way in the 2014 to Tampa, Florida with a new organization named International Association of Evangelical Churches. Doug did love Florida. And being part of a vital congregation in Tampa. But was destined to return to the Northwest.
Doug spent over a decade coaching and developing literally hundreds of churches as an advisor, speaker and designer of churches. He said, “really I have led churches, but I am not a great pastor per se. I am an evangelist that teaches the church to evangelize when at my best. And as best I can tell there aren’t many of my kind around. I am a churchman yet really designed to understand those outside the fold better than most.”
In 2017 Doug and his wife Lori decided their term in Florida had ended seeking open doors for the next step in their journey. On the way home to Washington Doug made it to his parent’s home in Central WA and was struck with a major heart attack and spent that year recovering.
God did a miracle in restoring his health and he has had a renewed and return indomitable passion to reach lost people again. And at the mature age of sixty-six decided he was to build a group that did only evangelism and prepared the development of an organization and ministry intended to be handed on to a next generation of evangelists he is training.
Doug is the author of 16 books. One was the seminal work on his Baby Boomer Generation called the Baby Boomerang. Other vital parts of his catalog were books on evangelism and personal freedom in Christ. Doug has also taught at numerous seminaries on the topics of evangelism, communication and church growth.
Doug also designed such outreach ministries in several locations as Arts Fairs, counseling clinics designed to help with addictions and life crisis and several different radio programs.
Doug had for well over a decade and a half a very popular radio show in Seattle. And he has after nearly 20 years returned to the air waves of Seattle with a new show titled, Caught On Air with Doug Murren with his co-host long term music director Gary Verrill. The show can be heard on CRISTA radio in the Seattle area and online at this site.
Today Doug and his wife Lori live in Anacortes, Wa from which he travels in and out where he can function as an “embedded staff” member, coach, speaker, designer and evangelist. 2019 marked Doug’s return to radio waves, and podcast broadcasting of his teaching. His show Caught On Tape with Doug Murren deals with issues related to experiencing Christ at a vital level. One of his regular co-hosts is Dr. Alakir Rogers also a member of his outreach event meetings along with his longtime partner in crime, Gary Verill and other friends.
Doug’s singular passion is do all he can to see evangelism reemerge as a passion of the church and for the “lost” to find their way in Christ. Doug has always been the consummate coach in developing leaders and pass on skill sets at evangelism and teach the effective elements of growing churches through evangelism. So much of what the Murren Group is about is developing the leaders who will pass on the baton of evangelism as well as seeing evangelism skills perfected for today’s extremely complex world.
Doug has long been a favorite speaker in just about every Christian group in America, Europe and Australia. And though he paces himself these days in his words, “I have to pass on what I have seen. We all have a call to reach those left outside wondering what is going on in the church. My job is to pass on the skills to do just that.”
The Murren Group is in motion to develop and redeveloping teams of very passionate people making Christ intelligible to all through creative media, art, speaking and skills in intercession as a church force committed to mission.
